On the back: “Tucker 3-6082, Route U.S. 1, Scarborough, Maine. Open year ’round, 7 days a week.

“Bewtween Scarborough Downs and Old Orchard beach. Acres of parking- rotary parking for trucks.”

I really wish I could have eaten at this joint! I love the booths and stools!

Pinehurst Motel, Route One, Scarborough, Maine

Wednesday, January 28th, 2009

On the back: “Tubs and showers…Electric radiant heat…Television and radios.”

The postcard doesn’t have a number listed on the back; if it did I would call. (When I do that I always feel like something Twilight Zone-ish is going to happen…)

The Atlantic House, Scarborough, Maine

I didn’t even know about this hotel until I saw this postcard. I became hopeful that maybe it was still out there, safe and sound, tucked away and poorly advertised. I did a search online and discovered that it apparently was razed in 1987, according to someone who posted a picture of it on flickr right before it was brought down. I called the Maine Historical Society just now to verify that it was gone and they confirmed this. But then how do you explain it being placed on The National Register of Historic Places in 1989?!

Admiral Motel, Scarborough, Maine

Thursday, January 22nd, 2009

On the back: “14 luxurious units, tile baths, free television, wall-to-wall carpeting, radiant heat. Mr. & Mrs. E.L. Burns, Owners & Operators.” I love the cars, the old sign and the seahorse by the windows.

This motel still stands today, open for business.

1957 Cedar Inn Yellow Pages Ad

I don’t know of any place in the area where you can still dine and dance. If I ever win the lottery I’d open a jazz lounge with a dress code. I wouldn’t hire a surly staff, either. Oh, the things I’d do if I had the money to invest in such things! (Most people dream about retiring- I dream about working…)
